Plein Air and Studio Paintings

“Light, shadow, color, and elements of nature shape my artistic process and choices. I spent my childhood exploring woods, fields and ponds, searching for snakes, chasing crayfish, collecting fossils, and climbing trees. These experiences and environments still draw my attention, though I give tree climbing a pass these days. Drawing has been a lifelong companion, shaping both my work and my way of seeing the world. My natural inclination is to create detailed, illustrative work, which carried into my education and my career. In recent years, as I continue to explore plein air painting, my approach has increasingly aligned with my early influences—the Impressionists—and with contemporary painters continuing that tradition.”  ~ J. Russell
